I've heard this rumor, too. I believe it to be unfounded.
Your seals are probably made of one of three elastomers, ethylene propylene
(aka EPM or EPDM), isoprene (IR or NR), or styrene butadiene (SBR, Buna S or
GRS), all three of which are rated #1 satisfactory in silicone fluids; that's
according to an elastomer handbook put out by the Parker O-ring company.
Silicone rubbers such as RTV sealants and Silastic WILL absorb silicone fluid,
causing swelling and softening. Maybe that's where the rumor came from.

When my XJ12 shuddered in reverse it was a bad gearbox rubber mount.
