I asked the rec.metalworking guys this and got no response. Is there an
inexpensive way (maybe hand-pumped equipment?) to get high quality bends
in roll bar/cage tubing? I've got some 1 3/4" x .120 tubing. I tried
using a cheapie ($140) pipe bending rig from Harbor Freight. This first
bend, of course, collapsed. After some practice, I made a decent bend,
about 45 degrees, with no sign of collapse. The outer radius was smooth,
but the inner radius was slightly wavy from where the tubing had been moved
on the mandrel for successive bends.
I'd like to have the capability of bending my own tubing. I wouldn't mind
building my own tools. Anyone have any ideas? (and I don't want to sound
mean, but I'd like to hear ideas and experience on bending one's own tubing,
not how it should be left to profesionals, etc. This is something that I
really would like to be able to do, if it can be done right without paying
big $$$$ for the equipment.)
Thanks,
Keith
