This is the first part of a series of articles I shall be posting, which
lists most of the British cars produced.

I want the completed directory to be used as a reference guide by the
readers of this mailing list. I do NOT intend this directory to the "bible" of
British cars, and as such I expect that there may be some errors. I have
done some cross-referencing with several references, but not much.

IF there are are any MAJOR errors in the data that I have presented, I would
appreciate if those errors be pointed out (preferably by e-mail - instead
of bombarding the whole SOL list). However I do NOT want to get into
a nit-picking situation, where one reader thinks a particular car weighed
2305 lbs, another says it weighed 2285 and I have shown it to weigh in at
2296 lbs.

I do not profess to be an "expert" on all the different marques and I do
have a definite lack of knowledge of certain makes and the data will show
that. I will accept any data which is missing (again via e-mail please)
and include it in the completed directory.

A lot of the data I have given covers many cars that were not available
in the US, and they are denoted by a "+" in the first column. There are
some cars which I am not sure if they were available here in the States,
so other kind sol readers will have to point them out for me.

Cars that were only available in the US market are shown by a "*" in the
first column.

The data only shows car manufactured between the years 1955-1980, although
I have included other post-1980 cars which I think are of interest to the
readers.

As discussed earlier this month, the definition of "British" car, is somewhat
difficult to nail down, and I do not want to start another discussion as to
its definition. MY definition of a British car is - "Any car which would be
welcome at a British Car Club, at a British Car Show or any other British Car
related event". This would rule out the Volvo 1800 (which was manufactured in
Britain - for a time), but would include a For Capri Mark I,II and III
(manufactured by Ford of England).

The style of a car is also somewhat difficult to define, when does a coupe
become a fastback, and if a fastback has an opening rear hatch does that make
it a hatchback ? I think the Jag E-type coupe is a good example , it has an
opening rear door, so does that make it a hatchback ? and it does not have
a trunk lid, so it not a coupe. Again I do not want to get into a
discussion about this, but I will accept gross errors in the data.
