The ring gear and pinion in the differential of my 60 Sprite Mark I have
rough gear mating surfaces, possibly from being flat towed with
insufficient oil. The "pumpkin" was examined by an expert mechanic, who
declared it reliable and serviceable, but likely to be noisy. Since I had a
choice between that pumpkin and one in which the ring gear was cracked, I
used it. But noisy it is, and very tiresome on the highway.
I am in the market for another 4.22 to 1 differential that is known to be
good. Questions:
1) Will any Spridget pumpkin (center member, or whatever you call it) go
into my axle? If not, what years will work? If a differential is out of
the car, can one determine by markings on it if it will fit? (I know where
and how the ratio is marked on the carrier.)
2) Does anyone on the list have a 4.22 to 1 bugeye differential for sale
that they know to be in good condition and quiet? If so, please e-mail me
directly giving the price and location.
Thanks, Ray Gibbons
