Phil,
Several years ago a gentleman by the name of
Gingery wrote a series of books published by
Lindsay Press on building a machine shop from
scratch. His first book dealt with making a
charcoal fired blast furnace. Book two was a
lathe, and I forget the order of the next books,
but, there was a shaper, drill press, horizontal
mill, dividing head and more. The point is, one
CAN cut a gear on the lathe using a single point
cutter ground to the profile of the gear tooth and
mounted in a boring bar. And, yes, according to my
Atlas Shaper owners' manual, a gear CAN be cut on
the shaper.
