The mailing list vs. newsgroup debate is an old one.
There is, however middle ground.
For example it is common practice within many organizations
to gateway mailing lists into internal newsgroups. This
technique is quite popular with all sorts of ietf, OSF and
X Consortium mailing lists. People with a preference to
read the british-cars via a newsgroup could petition their
news admins to provide the same service for the british-cars
mailing list.
At SGI, I've begun gatewaying (mail -> internal newsgroup)
the british-cars mailing list. I find trn much better at
cruising through the day's british-cars messages than elm,
but I'm not forcing my preference on anyone else! Postings
to the internal newsgroup by SGI people currently stay in
the newgroup, although it would be pretty easy to forward
them to british-cars@autox.team.net.
For the record, I'd like to see british-cars stay a mailing
list. Since I prefer reading the british-cars mailing list
via my newsreader, I'll still gateway it to an internal
newsgroup.
Ob. British-Cars:
Bill Woodruff picked up my '72 MGB bodyshell yesterday and
loaded it onto his trailer. He's on his way back to Michigan
tommorow with it and a fairly good looking Austin Healy BJ8
front shroud. I had no idea that Bug Healy shrouds were made
of aluminum!
Hey Scott! Thats the 4th british-cars person to own that '72 MGB!
