I looked at an interesting car today, a TR4A, almost. It was originally
a TR4A, solid axle model. A few years after the fellow bought it, it was
involved in an accident, and from the firewall forward, it is a TR4. The
welds where the 4 was attached to the 4A look pretty good. Actually, in
spite of about 25 years of dust, the whole car looks pretty good, solid and
rust free. The motor and gearbox (non-overdrive) are out of it, lots of
parts may be missing or broken from the stint the car spent outside and
suffered minor vandalism.
The car was owned by a fellow who went off to Viet Nam in '68, and never
made it home. So, it has been in various storage spots, mostly inside,
for the last 25 years. The body looks straight, the interior is toast,
and I'm not sure how complete the whole thing is. I don't remember seeing
the bumpers anywhere, for example. But it would be an excellent project,
as it is not afflicted with rust, just mostly neglect. The current owners
(a VW repair shop, mostly) were planning on selling it, but the old fellow's
son went the to Intermountain Vintage meeting last night, and may decide to
turn it into a racer if it doesn't get sold soon. They want in the area
of $1600 for it. If I had the money, with the parts from the Rust Rocket...
Anyway, if interested let me know.
