I spent today in the rain putting in a new coil, condensor and fuel filter
in the GT6. I put the coil and condensor in first, then checked for a better
spark. Yup. Better spark. But no go. Then I changed the fuel filter. It began
to cough and fire.

But now, it will threaten to start, then *clank* and stop. I don't know if
something is broken inside or what. It was running fine when it just died
earlier, I suspect from fuel starvation. When I spin the engine with no spark
there are no unusual noises. Only when it's kicking does the *clank* happen.

My first thought was that somebody had been funny and switched ignition wires,
which can cause ignition at the wrong time. But no, the firing order is correct.
I don't know if the clanking noise is really in the engine or if it's my
driveshaft, which makes that kind of noise when something jerky happens to it.
I also looked at the position of the rotor when the indicator on the crank
showed TDC. Looks pretty close, at least I know it's not a whole position off.
I tried retarding the timing, then it just sputters and never catches. When I
advance the timing it catches, then clanks and stops.

The timing chain can't be broken, the rockers rock and the distributer turns.
If the chain hopped some teeth, could that cause these symptoms? But if it
had hopped teeth, wouldn't the distributer not line up with the crankshaft at
all?

*sigh* I thought this one was the engine I DIDN'T need to rebuild...
