Hello All,
It's good to be back.
For all those out there who tried to send me answers to GT6 questions
over the last couple of weeks, my network mailer went haywire and
nothing could go in or out. I have re-configured my setup to use
CCmail rather than the VAX so....
My new address is: Timothy_Radsick@ple.af.mil
I have tried that one a few times and it seems to work.
Now, more GT6 questions.
I cleaned up the caked on grease from the tranny and the differential.
I opened up the tranny just to see what was inside. I found no
broken teeth, etc. Would it be worth it to try to replace bearings
and the like since I have it out now? They seemed OK, but I guess I'm
not really sure what to look for. One problem did arise -- when I
took off the bellhousing, I noticed that there were three little
springs that surround a plug where the reverse shaft (?) meets the
front of the case. Unfortunately, When I finished cleaning I only
noticed two such springs. Ooops! Uh, is this a problem? Anyone
know where I can get springs?
As for the differential, I heard that is is a bad idea to go poking
around inside. Is this true? I have a new gasket and I will be
getting new oil seals (I'm gonna fight oil leaks until I realize only
phyrric victories against my enemies time and money) so I planned on
replacing those. Anything else I should do?
When last I got the SOL digest, there was some chatter about U-joints.
Well, I have a basic question to throw into the list. Uh, how do
you install them?
I can figure out the "use sockets and a press to remove bearing cups"
part but I am a bit unclear on the lubrication technique. The
instructions on the (Quinton-Hazell) U-joints are not too clear on how
much grease to use, etc. Also, there is a closed off grease fitting
port. Should I get a zerk fitting, install the U-joint, grease it and
then remove the fitting? That sounds like the best way. BTW, are Q-H
U-Joints really lame? If they are, perhaps I shouldn't replace the
U-joints on the drive shaft which seem to spin just fine? I am a bit
nervous about either (1) leaving old parts on when they should be
replaced and (2) replacing good parts and screwing things up because
the replacement parts suck or my installation is faulty.
Finally, Any advice on how to remove the big, long bolts from the rear
(rotoflex) suspension? They seem to have become quite comfortable
where they now sit!
Thanks all,
Tim
