Does anyone have a suggestion for a sealant for gluing/sealing the
transmission cover to the body?
Sure, I do - don't. You don't want to glue the transmission cover,
because you're going to have to remove it again.
Go to the hardware store and buy some foam weatherstrip. It comes in
various widths and thicknesses, and is self adhesive. 10 feet should do
the trick. Measure the width of the "flange" on the cover (I think it's
about 3/4") and buy the thinnest weatherstrip that will fill all the
gaps (probably 3/8 or so). Get the heavy duty long life stuff, so it
has a decent chance of not cooking from the exhaust heat.
Glue it to the tranny cover and pre-punch the holes for the screws.
Be sure to seal up the U joint cover well, too; that's the one place we
still have a leak. If you can, take a test drive checking for leaks
before you put the carpets in.
