Regarding your question about a Spitfire OD fitting in a Midget:
For later Spitfires, the OD and non-OD transmissions are the same length
so any problems with getting an OD unit in a Midget would be with
clearance in the transmission tunnel. Was the Midget available with an
OD transmission of its own? If so, there is probably plenty of room
for the OD.
Is the OD unit you mentioned already mated to a transmission? The
OD won't just bolt up to a standard tranny. A shorter mainshaft is
required. If you can find the correct mainshaft, it is not very
hard to make the conversion but finding one can be difficult.
