Help, my Large British Cruiser is acting up. 1974 Jaguar XJ12L with 4
Zenith-Stromberg CD175 carbs and air conditioning.
Symptoms: starts easily from cold, runs fine as its warming up, temp needle
gets to Normal within 2 miles, car runs til about 4 miles, begins to sputter,
gets steadily worse for about another mile and dies, cranks but not one pop,
driver pushes it (ugh) to a safe parking spot, goes for help, back in about an
hour, car starts right up and drives home. This has happened twice. Car was
driven daily until this happened. AC was off.
What to do? Fuel filter in the trunk is clean. Can't find any vacuum leaks.
Fuel pumps all working, recently rebuilt. Air cleaners are clean. Carbs
recently rebuilt with new diaphragms, carb throttle bypass valves and bimetal
valves all replaced.
Could it be the ignition amplifier or ballast resistor, both of which are
original and still mounted on the engine as from the factory? Do they fail with
these symptoms? I have heard of people remounting the amplifier somewhere away
from the engine heat, but where? On the inner fender or on the rail above the
radiator? Could it be the coil? Anybody have any thoughts? Thanks
