I went to look at a Sprite this weekend, and it was a bit odd, so I thought I'd
see if anyone here could clear this up.
The car was originally titled in 1967, but it was an H-AN8, which should make
it a MKIII. From the serial number (H-AN8L 657xx), it would seem to be a very
late MKIII (according to the A-H Buyer's Guide), but the engine was a 1275, I
think (12CC). The owner is the second owner, and he is fairly sure that it
has the original engine. The car has a MKIII dash and soft top, and a factory
hardtop. Could it be the case that this was a transition car, a MKIII with a
MKIV engine, or is the owner just mistaken?
BTW, the asking price, for a car with an OK body (new floorpans welded in, body
cleaned up and painted, but holes in rockers repaired with fiberglass rather
than steel), a factory hardtop, a good engine,a bad gearbox, and an amateur
paint job, was $1500 (US). As I have a soft spot for Sprites (I owned a 1965
MKIII in an previous life), I'm considering making the guy an offer. What's
it worth?
Thanks,
Ken
