This is my first time using this service so please excuse me if I have
violated any protocol.
I recently became the owner of a 1973 Spitfire 1500 and would like to see if
anyone has encountered some of the problems that are currently perplexing me.
1) The rear right corner seems to sit a little lower than the left, and when
pushing down on either corner, there does not appear to be alot of travel. I
looked underneath and there do not appear to be any cracks in the transverse
leaf spring. Are the springs simply likely to sag after 20 yrs ??
2) While inspecting the rear suspension, I noticed that on one wheel, the
axel is free to slide in and out of the rear trunnion assembly approximately
3/4 inch. I initially thought that this would mean a worn bearing but I
would not think that this would manifest in the manner mentioned. Does this
mean that the axel is slipping relative to the bearing or that the entire
bearing/keeper assembly is moving relative to the trunnion. Finnally, is
this worth replacing ?? I have talked to two local mechanics who say that
unless the bearing goes it should be left alone.
Thanks
Jim McNamara
