I have found an insultation for automobiles called, "Nsyltech".
(404-945-9508) Suwanee, Ga. It consists of 2 layers of thick
walled bubble wrap with very shiny aluminum foil on both sides.
The total thickness is about 3/16". Over the wek-end I used
3M spray adhesive (great stuff) and applied this to the floor,
transmission hump, and inside firewall. I felt some heat still
but I do not have th hose on my heater. I suspect that the engine
heat is coming through this pipe and into the cockpit. (I finally
stuffed a wrag into the heater opening under the hood and this seemed
to really stop the heat. I have finished putting new carpet in the
car. I also notice less sound with the insulation and carpeting.
One thing that I fgound that is curious is that the foot well on the
LHD side is approximately 2" more narrow than on the RHD side.
Apparently the English felt that the driver (LHD) needed more room
than the passenger. When we changed the steering over to the left,
we have to put up with less room. After I put the insulation and the
carpet down, I don't have a lot of room to put my foot on the accelerator.
The sole of my shoe barely brushes the brake pedal when I press down on
the accelerator. But...the car is definately cooler.
I also put the door seal around the door opening. It doesn't
give me the best feeling to place the metal channel on the metal edge and
bang it with a rubber hammer. The two vertical flanges are one layer of metal
and the seal fits pretty well. The bottom flange is 3 layers of metal
and is wide. The seal doesn't fit that well. Oh well, if it doesn't
stay I'll try contact cement.
I talked with a Miata owner this morning and he said that he doesn't
have any heat problem. I wonder how they did that.
