Step #1 is to verify that your vacuum hoses/lines are all working properly
ie. not leaking. At the same time, confirm that the vacuum retard unit on
the distributor is functioning. With a working vacuum hose attached to the
distributor retard unit, the RPM should drop (typically from 1300 down
to 800-900). This may be where your problem actually lies.
Often the vacuum retard diaphram tears and no longer functions. Then the
idle speed won't come down! Try unplugging and then plugging in the vacuum
hose at the distributor and see if anything changes!
> Can I remove the choke assembly and attach a home made manual choke cable?
There is supposed to be a kit available, but again, in this case let's
confirm the choke is functioning. Can you feel the heat of the coolant through
the metal casing of the choke water jacket. Maybe the supply hoses are
kinked (like mine were!!). Also, these cars MUST (!!) use a 190F thermostat
to get the engine warm enough to shut off the choke (again a problem I
encountered!) Finally, the actual choke thermostat is in fact available from
the Roadster Factory (SLP 117) which is inside that water jacket. This piece
"could be faulty, but verify the easy stuff first.
