| THIS IS A CONTINUATION OF MY WRITEUP OF THE SCCA ENDURO@SearsPt
| ---------------------------------------------------------------
|
| the first part of this write-up described Chris Blanchfield and I
| trying to get the biggest bugs out of the car at the Friday open track
| session.
|
| SATURDAY:
|
| Saturday morning we had breakfast in San Rafael where we had been staying
| with our daughter Lisa and her husband Todd. (I wonder if I can get one
| of my other daughters to move to Monterey) As soon as the local Lumber
| store opened we were in buying furnace filters and other odd usefull bits,;
| then out to the track.
|
| With bits of furnace filter and old panty hose Chris fabricated a very nice
| set of air cleaners for the air horns on the webbers. We had gotten only 5
| laps the day before. Rochelle was to drive the morning practice and get a
| feel for the car. Rochelle's plan for the morning was to be steady not to
| set records. She was to get used to the car and report back on it's behavior.
| The car seemed to be performing well enough but still room for improvement.
| An valve cover oil leak had developed which made it very smoky inside the car.
|
| We were running a new fiberglas hood that Jack had given us a few monthas
| before. Back at the paddock Rosie did some quick fiberglas work on the
|drivers
| inner fender where a tire had been touching. Andy convinced me to spring for
| a couple of new front tires. Wise move.
|
| I was to drive the afternoon session. We made another small jet change.
| The times in the afternoon session were to determain our starting position
| so I was pushing the car a bit harder.
|
| Out on track and the car seemed to turn fron DrJeckel to Mr Hyde. It would
| GO-LIKE-HELL partway around the track then it would cut out baddly. I finaly
| had to stop off track to get it going again. I made it back to the pits where
| Andy and all looked for loose wires without result. Then back on the rack to
| see if I could get one good lap for the timer. The problem pulled into focus.
| It seemed to develope a regular cycle and it became clear to me that I was
| running out of gas despite a full tank, large clean lines and a separate fuel
| filter on each carb. At the end of the session I was towed off track.
| So ended the afternoon practice.
|
| Late that afternoon found me and Jeffie riding bikes maddly from shop to
| shop arround the track. Finding a fitting hear and an adapter there. After
| rounding up the bits needed we headed back to the paddock where EVERYONE
| pitched in to work on the car. Chris and Jack installed the new fuel pump and
| a regulator. Rosie installed the new transistor ignition. I think it was
|Jeffie
| who redid the overflow tanks and fixed the oil leak in the valve cover. The
| generator chugged away. Others folks mounted the new tires, made spagetti or
| just sang and danced. Andy presided. The whole thing was like a friggin
| Buzby Berkley movie. "Gosh Gang, We can build a race car! I know we can!"
| 8^) 8^) 8^0 ;^) ( it fair brings a tear to the eye)
|
| By the time we were done it was too late to start the engine that night.
| There is a "noise" rule against starting race engines after 6:00 pm or before
| 8:00 am. That night found us once again full of spagetti and beer and
|wondering
| if the car would startup in the morning.
