If, as you believe, the Gold Book is a NADA publication, that would
explain the built in bias. The Old Cars Price Guide also lists the
66 TR-4A at $10,500 for a "pristine" car. That's much more realistic
than an $8000 price. The value in terms of a loss should reflect
being able to purchase an equivalent car in a relatively short
period of time (30 days or so) as a replacement. The short "buy"
interval then tends to make the true replacement cost offset towards
a high figure.
