Bob,
Get the engine really hot. A hot day helps. Then park it in the
driveway and take out the plugs. You should be able to see some steam
coming out of the plug hole if there is water getting in there.
I would think that your head is fine and that unless the block itself
is badly warped that is not the problem. How old is your gas?
Is the fuel pump putting out the right volume of fuel?
I have to tell this story since it has made me so happy: About a month
ago I reported that my car started inexplainably cutting out about
2000 rpm. It idled great, but would just die at that mark. I suspected
bad gas and Roger Garnett confirmed that. So, I put a thing of gas
treatment/water remover in the tank and also added some octane booster
(which was probably just kerosene). The dang thing still wouldn't
run. So, in a fit of insanity, I let it sit in the garage for two
weeks. I finally had some free time and went out to try and debug it
again. Bingo, it starts up and runs great. I tuned it anyway
and now it runs better than it ever had, I guess that the water remover
stuff I put in there took a while to work.
If a specific cylinder is cutting out there should be a reason. Oil
fouling? Bad plug? Bad wire? Bad distributor cap? I guess we can assume
that your valves are set correctly and that there is no huge exhaust
or intake leak?
Any word on the Cincy club's trip to Brown County? The leaves are at their
peak right now.
