Aha!
I was going through the latest SnapOn catalogue (drool drool) and found what
appears to be the exact right tool for TR6 rear hub adjustment. On page 279
of the latest catalogue, in the diesel tools section, Cummins service tools
in particular:
ST845 Fan Wrench. 2" open end, 15" long. Special thin head for
adjusting fan hub.
The picture shows it to look just right. I am going to assume the adjuster
nuts really are 2" and mine are just deformed, and a 2" wrench is what's
needed.
The wrenches are $46.25 each. I think I'll get two. Fortunately my axle
is still sitting in the living-room -- I was going to put it back on today.
