You have the right idea. The broken area should be welded (MIG preferably),
or at least brazed. A back-up section should help considerably. For
both stages, avoid overheating to prevent warping. While leading (solder) is
fine for filling body panels, but is usually too weak for joining bodywork.
In this case, it may actually be a good choice for sweating the patch
to the back of the door, if you're not up for welding it. 

Or, you can purchase a new door skin at a reasonable price...

And, don't close the door by grabbing the side window!
