With only 4 days till Palo Alto All British Day, I
thought I'd start off your morning's with a quick
update on how the mutilple british-car repairs have
been going:
Redcar progress- last night I replaced the freshly
cleaned (but not with corrected jetting) DCOE, and
changed out the coil mount to one w/o the ballast
resistor holder.
Riley progress- last night I finally managed to extract
a hunk of cold steel known as the water pump. A feat of
engineering that has yet to be rivalled, I spent the
vast majority of my time removing mostly unrelated
componenets just to be able to get at the bolts that
held the pump to the lump. What I found; By design, the
Riley pump is *separate* from the motor, that is the
impeller is contained in a separate case, and does not
extend into the block. There was a very mysterious
looking pice of thin metal just resting, completely
unattached to anything, inside the thermostat housing.
P.O. presence everywhere, as proven by mismatched
washers, etc. The return line for the later model
heater is the block drain petcock, which at least
indicates all the coolant has been being circulated.
The impeller doesn't look capable of stirring a cup of
coffee, let alone collant thru this hunk o' motor. The
fan was on backwards. And the whole assembly weighs at
least 20lbs.
It goes to the bead blaster's today so we'll then
see clearly if R & R will be capable by Sunday. I'll
keep you posted.
Pre-Palo Alto Breakfast; For those of you who'd
like to meet, eat & caravan in, we usually meet for
breakfast at the Bill of Fare Restaurant on Saratoga
ave, east (?) of 280, beforehand. We'll be there between
8:30 & 9, so please reply if you'd like to join us. See
you there !
