Well, until someone antis up a full technical description-
My muddled mind says your basic limited slip uses some kind of clutching,
which can allow some slippage, and results in gradual, smooth lock up.
Steves Jabro has a Sprite rear end with a "BMC Locker" in it. It seems
to be a ratchet of some sort, that actually locks in after a small amount
of slipage. This can be pretty jerky to drive, as there's no in-between.
Had to work a bit at this spring's autox to get it around some slow,
tight turns.
