Its been awhile, but I seem to remember a small nut like fitting next to the threaded part. I was careful to soak it with "liquid wrench" for 2 days before pulling it out, then used 2 wrenches, one on each side in order to limit the shear forces. These things always make me nervous... mine came out easily. You might try vice-grips in each direction, but its usually a one shot deal. Clean around it and hopefully you'll find the "nut" portion.
