I've bead-blasted. It works, but it's slow. You might get some
spray-and-strip (Hemmings, et. al). It works pretty good.

Better to use an Aluminium rated primer, or better yet, 2 part epoxy.

BTW, colour paints for basecoat/clear coat is formulated different than
regular ole' colour paints. (Enamals) I imagine you can do with a
*compatible* clear overcoat, but it probably won't be as tough. 
(Don't spray laquer over enamel, especially fresh!)

You might visit your local paint store, and tell them what your needs are.
