By coincidence, I had an experience on this topic just yesterday;
although my gearbox is a small German one...

I had been using Redline MTL (synthetic) in the gearbox of my 2002,
which has about 75k-80k of age. The car shifted well, the syncros
being neither slow or noisy. Unfortunately the rear seal on the
box leaks and my lovely MTL was slowly distributed across the roads
I travel in the Rochester area. So until I have the opportunity to
replace the seal I had the local shop refill the gearbox with the
fluid they normally use - Swepco, a non-synthetic. The result is
my gearbox does not shift as smoothly and in particular the syncros
are slower. When I replace the seal I will go back to the Redline
MTL.

I have also had similar results with a couple of front-wheel drive
european hatchbacks.

I don't know that this helps you much, other than to reinforce your
experiences with the RX-7. Perhaps a call to Redline {(800) 624-7958
or (415) 228-7576}, or one of their competitors, is in order.
