There's one more thing to add to the temp/anit-freeze/pinging discussion.
The temperature reported by the temp gauge is exactly that temp at the
gauge pickup.  If this is reasonably close to the thermostat, it will also
reflect the temp at which the thermostat opens (assuming it gets hot enough
to open it at all), and above that, the temp at which any fan comes on (if
it is thermostat-operated electric).  However this says nothing about
whether there is any temperature *gradient* in the cooling system.  With
different coolant mixtures, there can easily be different temo values
in the block and head while the one boundary condition, a fixed value
at the thermostat, remains in effect.  This Pinto simply does what physics
and mathematics and such says should happen...which is a good thing!  The
real conclusion you can draw is that the difference between pure water and
a water/e-g mixture is pretty great.
