I was going to wait until I sent out the end of the month stats to mention
this, but some of you might be wondering why Mike apologized. It certainly
wasn't the content, as that was most appropriate. The fact that the article
was formatted for lines longer than 80 characters is not a serious sin. What
I chastised him for, as well as another person earlier this month, was the
length.
In general, if what you have is more than a few screenfuls of stuff you should
not just send it off. Unlike the majority of us who get our SOL fix for free,
there are some folks who have to pay for each message, or pay based on the
size. Not everyone has lots of spool space for things. What I recommend is
that you post a short message to the list, saying something like
I have written "The Complete History of Trunnion Lubrication in Modern
Warfare",
it is about 13.7 megs long (when compressed). If you are interested, it can
be
gotten via FTP from bosco.frobble.team.net, or private mail, or carrier pigeon
if necessary.
Basically, it is just a matter of being nice to everyone on the list, and not
burdening them with something they may not want. As always, lengthy bits like
this can be put into the pub/sol directory on hoosier.utah.edu (128.110.4.73)
for public access.
