If its a 1966 Cortina, this would make it a Mark II, which was the 1st or 2nd
year of the new body style. They came is a variety of performance levels
from boring to exciting. At the lower end was the 1300cc and at the top end
was the Cortina Lotus (which is different to the Lotus Cortina).
I had one of the latter cars for 4 years in the late 70's (although I
substituted the Lotus engine for the Kent engine - as a student I could not
afford Lotus parts !!!)
The main areas of rust are ::
1 - the sills under the doors tend to rot from the inside out.
2 - the part where the MacPherson struct is bolted to the innner wing tends to
rust, although they are easy to patch.
3 - The inside of the front wing, where the frnt wheels throw up all the dirt
will rust easily because mud gets trapped easily. The same is true from the
back of the headlights.
4 - Look in the boot where the inside wheel wells meet the outer fenders, and
lift uo the back seat cushion and also inspect the wheel wells.
5 - Remove the frover/passenger kick-plates and look at the fron inner wheel
wells
6 - The front of the bonnet was notorios for rusting out, and the lip that
hangs down on the boot.
Good luck
