I have a 77 MGB I am restoring. I have rebuilt the suspension, brakes,
electrical, body, repaint, top, etc. I was advised to consider rebuilding
the engine (112k miles) next, but the oil pressure is good (50-70 pounds)
no smoke, (haven't tested the compression recently, but was advised by the
previous owner that all 4 cyl were about 125-130 lbs. This was a one
owner car and the maintenance log kept seem to indicate a fairly regular
maintenance upkeep (oil change/filter ~4-5k miles). I have heard pros
and cons about the 18V engine that the cam/crank were made of "soft"
metal and typical wear upto 100k miles could mean a major overhaul
is recommended. This car is a "third car" and is not going to be driven
as a primary source of transportation, but I do want it to be dependable.
I am looking for input from folks who have had experience with high
mileage, reasonably maintained MGB's and whether a rebuild is eminently
needed. Since I have done all the work on the rest of the car, I would
likely be the one to rebuild the engine. Thanks
