I'd like to solicit comments/experiences from the list regarding types of
air compressors. There was a discussion some time ago about sizes/brands and
so forth, as well as priorities of tool selection. One topic which was not
addressed, and which I find myself considering, is types of compressors. They
seem to come in two varieties (at least for home-shop sized units): Belt-
driven units requiring compressor oil, and Oil-less units. I've been eyeing
one up which is made by Ingersoll-Rand, and is advertised at 3.5 HP. Now
before you start, the data plate sez 15 amps at 120 volts, which doesn't come
anywhere near 3.5 HP, unless someone redefined the term. Anyhow, it is of the
oil-less variety, and claims something like 7.2 cfm @90 psi, or somesuch, and
is priced at (the everyday low-price of) $258 (which is below my pain
threshold - Tp). What I'm looking for is experiences/opinions regarding
oil-less vs oiled compressors, including but not limited to: longevity,
reliability, performance, and anything else pertinent.

Email directly to me, and if there's interest, I will post a summary of the
responses.

Thanks in advance,

John
