|Subj: My midget leans no more.
------------------------------------------------------------------
With the nameing of cars thread, I was seriously thinking of naming
my midget Ms. Pisa (as in the leaning tower of). I had tried a few
things to correct the lean, (new springs, reseating the inner pivot
locating washers), but it wouldn't stay level. On wednesday, I was
tired of thinking about what it could be and I decided to remove the
A-arm on the passengers side and see what was going on. I decided to go
with nylatron bushings (definitely not what I expected) when I put it
back together.
The A-arm and kingpin seemed just fine, so yesterday I went to put
the A-arm/kingpin back on. Of course it took about 5 times longer to
put it back together than it does to take it apart. But, I finally got
everything where it's supposed to be and by 7:30 I was ready for a test
drive. Truly amazing. The car is real tight, with new coils in the
front and new leaf springs in the rear. I can't imagine having any
faster steering response than this.
Now I need to do the drivers side. The bushings on the drivers side
look a whole lot better than the ones on the passenger side did. Now,
after a few laps around the neighborhood, the car finally, after 5
years sits level. I think that a bad seating of the coil spring might
have also attributed to the problem. Before this, the spring on the
passenger side had a slight bend to it when looking from the front with
the weight on the wheels, while the one on the drivers side was
straight.
This was the last problem I was trying to straighten out before
putting this baby back on the road. I'll wait a few weeks for a little
warmer weather and then I'll start breaking in the rebuilt motor.
