Re: disk-brake backing plates

I don't run backing plates on two of my cars, one of which is used exclusivly
on track and the other sometimes on track but mostly on the street.

In road racing most people don't seem to use backing plates on spot discs
(Rain or Shine) Not having backing plates can allow the brakes to run much
cooler, particularly if ducting is added. However I don't think that
autocrossing will get your brakes very hot. (at least compared to roadracing).

I've heard that one of the problems using some of the metalic pad compounds
in autocrossing is that the brakes don't get hot enough for them to start
working.

It's not uncommon for a light coat of rust to form on bare rotors. Maybe one
of the functions of backing plates on street cars is to prevent people from
seeing that rust and worrying about it?
