I have been experiencing this same problem on my MGC since I reinstalled
the engine. I believe that it is caused by the solenoid being slightly
out of alignment with the flywheel. I suspect this because I misplaced the
bottom bolt that holds the alternator on and I haven't been able to find
one short enough to stick in there and tighten all the way that doesn't
start pushing on the flywheel. For some strange reason the bolt I had
bagged for this purpose is way too long. I just hope I didn't get the
flywheel on backwards!

Anyway, the theory at this point is that as soon as I tighten that bottom
bolt the problem will go away. You might make sure the alternator is
mounted tightly and apply some white grease (the spray on stuff is really
cool) to the solenoid gear.
