When I rebuilt the Ford 400 in my pickup truck I had the same problem.
For a couple of bucks I got a thin sleeve that went over the crankshaft
and provided a nice new surface for the oil seal. A year and half later
the engine is still spotless. I used a bit of RTV to seal the sleeve.
