The GT6 suffers from the same problem; perhaps more so because the
exhaust follows the transmission tunnel back. I'm planning two mods:
First is to wrap the exahust manifold in Genibrel Thermopower tape,
from the head back to the tailshaft. I expect this to make a huge
difference in the amount of heat coming up the tranny, and I might even
get some power back to boot. It should take a lot of heat out of the
engine compartment, which means cooler running, and a denser intake charge...
Second is to cover the tranny cover in some sort of metal insulation.
There are two types out there -- one seems to be a fairly thin
aluminized mylar sheet that comes in 48" width. This would be the
easiest to cut and apply. The other is a thicker inuslating "blanket"
with some sort of aluminized outer layer. I expect that this can't be
cut to fit quite as easily, and since it's thicker it'll be harder to
fit under the carpet. But it might do a better job cutting the heat.
None of this stuff is cheap -- the very thin stuff is about $40/foot,
and I can't remember the blanket prices. But these seem to be the
options that are out there.
I doubt very much that a molded fiberglass cover will do *much* to cut
the heat, though it will do some.
