"[Jim] Clark was killed in a Lotus. So was [Jochen] Rindt. Both
crashes raised questions about the frugality of Chapman's designs.
"John Surtees, who drove for Lotus then, said, 'It certainly helped,
in those early days, if the driver was ignorant of certain basic engineering
principles'.
[Mike] Kimberley shook his head, then spoke in his mentor's
defence: 'If he could get one bolt to do the work of two, he would.
He stressed the skin, he stressed the engine. He taught us to always
come back to the basics. To keep asking, "What are we trying to
do here?"'"
