Subject: TR6 Starter Problems
Now that the carbs on the TR6 are rebuilt and the engine seems to
run fairly well, I'd like to fix an intermittent problem that has
been bugging me for a while. Occasionally when trying to start
the car, the starter will make a click-click-clicking noise, and
sometimes just a single click and then nothing. Later, it will
start just fine, sometimes, thinking that maybe the starter isn't
engaging the teeth correctly, I would push the car a few feet with
the car in 4th and then it would sometimes start. Any suggestions
of where to start looking (or even "get a new starter" suggestions)
would be appreciated.
Besides what has already been mentioned I've had this problem result
from two other causes related to the battery rather than the starter or
starter solenoid. Check the battery connections very carefully. The
terminals should be clean and the connections snug. A loose connection
or a resistive connection due to corrosion may allow enough current to
operate the lights and other accessories but not allow the high cranking
current required during starting. One other possibility is a loose
battery post. If the post isn't making good internal contact, the
result is the same. You can check the post by wiggling or tapping
(lightly) on it while trying to start the car or perhaps by watching the
lights. What I suspect was happening to me in the above cases was that the
solenoid relay was pulling in but the high current drain to the starter
overwhelmed the system and the relay dropped out, then pulled in again as
soon as the battery voltage recovered and the cycle continued resulting
in the clicking solenoid.
