For what it's worth, Carroll Smith recommends cadmium plating in
Prepare To Win. Less expensive and more abuse resistant than chrome,
apparently, and can be buffed to just about as nice a finish.

I thought very seriously about looking for a plating house when I had
my front suspension apart...
