DOT3 or DOT4 - the age matters!

As an anecdote, the manual for my '76 TR7 says to use Castrol LMA
DOT4 fluid.

On my roommate's (at least '86) Jeep Cherokee Girling system, the
cap says to use only DOT3 fluid.

It looks as though Girling switched over to different rubber bits
at some time in their history. What have we learned? Use DOT4 LMA
unless the reservoir cap says otherwise.
