On the clanging MGB engine with no cylinder specific symptoms: Might be the thrust washers on the crank. If idle speed drops significantly when clutch is engaged, this is almost sure to be the problem. Cranks are expensive, the washers are cheap. You can also tell by prying outward on the damper/pulley with a large screwdriver. There should be no visible endfloat. Unfortunately, you have to pull the pan to check for sure.
