I, too, thought this was unusual. It took me a while to find my
source. From the 1989 Victoria British Sunbeam catalog, page 6:
"On Rootes Group Cars, the chassis number and the engine
number are THE SAME. If the engine number (which is
located on the right side of the engine block) is different
from the chassis number, then your Sunbeam has been fitted
with a different engine than original."
This statement does not appear in the 1990 catalog.
