Ed,
Whilst no expert on the 12-cyl models, I have owned XJ6s, and suugest the
following:
Body: All XJs rot furiously! Watch out for innner sills, boot floor and
(besides all obviously structural places) the bonnet mounts. Rotten
bonnet mounts can result in a bonnet that wont shut and is NOT a
simple problem to sort out.(Close XJ bonnets by standing in front
of the car and pushing gently in the centre of the bonnet)
Mechanics:
V12 engine is a beautiful thing and reliable only if loved.
Watch out for any signs of overheating, and if you buy one, change
ALL the cooling system hoses and use recommended coolant mix.
The early injection systems can be trouble, but there again the
carb models are pigs to set up.
Transmission should be carefully checked esp. diff, auto boxes are
usually OK but a manual box should be treated suspiciously.
As for putting a V12 in a TR, it sounds like a activity for crazies! Unless
suspension, trans, brakes etc are changed, and a lot of extra metal put in,
you would have a corkscrew shaped potential accident!!
