And it works too! But, being basically a weenie at heart, I've
always avoided it for fear of cracking a window. What do the
SOL experts think?
The rule of thumb is warm water is ok, hot is a no-no. Also, even
warm water isn't such a good idea on a windshield that has a pit
or small crack. Scientific American did a piece on glass cracking,
and found to their surprize that the main vehicle for crack expansion
is hydrostatic pressure. Keep water out of the crack and it doesn't get
much bigger!
This is also the method by which mountains end up eventually as molehills,
microscopic cracks in rocks get some water molecules in them and with
temperature changes the cracks expand.
