I think I would look into a fuel cell or the like before I would start
cutting on a gac (boom!) tank.  I don't need a bigger tank, I'm an
autocrosser.  Seriously, while you are contemplating this, keep in
mind that 1 cubic foot equals 7.48 gallons.  If the tank were 20
inches square (yes I know I am only guessing), your 3" band would add
only about 0.7 gallons.
