Aack! Pifft! Dive! Dive! Incomming!
Gerry, please, don't modify your current fuel tank. Gas tanks can be very
dangerous just to repair, much less chop-up. There is a good danger of
explosion, even with an "empty" tank. They are quite difficult to clean out.
Even though older tanks aren't as good as modern, they are designed with some
crush proofing and leak resistance, which will be lost if you do as described.
While it may be possible to modify a tank, I'd want done on a *new* one
only. And even though I'm a somewhat proficient welder, I'd probably take
a job like this to a pro who works with tank construction on a regular basis.
(mayby I could handle it after I get my MIG welder, and get some serious hours
on it)
        Some more desireable solutions:
-Find a larger tank which will fit in place of the old one. (Newer Spridgets?)
-Fit an additional, auxiliary tank, *carefully*, in the boot.
-Dump the old tank, and buy a Fuel Cell, which is a saftey-maxed gas tank, used
in racing, which mounts in the boot.
Consider aspects such as accident resistance. Try not to create a Pinto.
[where the gas tank mounting design allowed a bolt to puncture the tank in
the event of a rear impact, causing a rapid reduction in the number of an
undesireable model... They don't use too many Pintos in Demolition Derby's]
