EGR On Intakes

I am interested in replacing the intake manifold with a higher performance
version.  Mine currently has an EGR valve.  Do I have the option to replace
the intake with a non-EGR version or would it be required based on the the
vacuum system setup.

I have also seen some EGR covers to close off the port on the manifold.  Would
there be any drawback for using this option.  The seller indicated this would
reduce carbon buildup in the intake.
