I can't help much but have you verified all the gears are where they are
supposed to be by moving the selector? If your linkage is out of adjustment,
based on your description of the problem moving the selector more towards N
would get you third gear. Odds are it's not a linkage problem but it's worth
checking because it's easy.
Another check is the fluid level and condition.

I drove my '75 Bricklin today for the first time in a couple of months and it
isn't shifting into third gear (FMX automatic). Any suggestions what to check?
It hasn't been giving any signs of trouble. I just finished taking the dash
apart to align the heater box, but I haven't touched the shift linkage or
anything obviouslt related to the transmission.
