The 351-W (Windsor) is basically a stroked Small block in the same family
with the 289 and 302.

The 351-C (Cleveland) and M come from the 385 series engine family, a much
different beast.

One easy way to tell the difference is to look at the timing cover just in
front of the distributor. The 351-W will have a cast aluminum timing cover that
is bolted to the front of the block. The 351-C has most of the timing cover
cast into the front of the block with a thin steel plate between the water
pump and the block.

As for performance building, there are more performance parts easer to get
with a smaller price-tag for the 351-W. But if your looking for horsepower high
in the rpm range then the Cleveland is for you.
