door striker plate holder

The sliding part in the frame that the door striker latch bolts into to hold
it in place is missing in my Bricklin's passenger side doorway.

Is there access somehow to this space to replace it with a fabricated or
similar  part, or do I have to cut out part of the frame channel in that area?
